Are we running out of ideas?

December 26, 2008

When I was a kid, I found it hard to grasp the idea of the unlimited. There had to be a limit to everything. Some sort of limit. What this meant was that ideas too were limited. There were only a few ideas to be had, and we were all competing to think of them before the other. What reminded me of this was that I was just reading 365tomorrows.com and people are inadvertently submitting stories highly similar to ones posted a year or more ago - stories sometimes with just the same core concept and other times with almost the exact same progression of events. Then again, no one else seems to notice. It seems like I'm remembering things that never happened.

I can swear that I've read these things before because I can instantly recognize what's going to come next, often with the entire page not on screen. Anyway, with respect to childhood and madness, there is another thing to mention. When I was a child, I was quite an avid reader (as is to be expected considering I had no television or computer at the time), and I read in one place that the reasons for certain kinds of madness were still unknown. That day I wished that I would go insane, just so that I could write down, you know chronicle, all the events that led up to that final irreparable state of madness. Well, if this is the first sign of the beginning of something like that: Be aware, I'm keeping my word.
