Broadband throttling begins with Airtel

February 10, 2009

I've been informed by the Airtel Technical Support that the reason my connection has been reduced to two-thirds of its speed is that I've used over 25 GB in this particular month. The only reason we obtained an unlimited plan is so that we'd have to avoid the hassles of dealing with this crap (checking bandwidth limits, and stuff like that), particularly because using 4 computers in the house means that this is almost guaranteed to happen. I am very unhappy with this state, and frankly, I cannot see how they could have just gone about this without having:

  1. Informed me first.
  2. Given me an option to upgrade to a plan without this bullshit.

It's obvious what's happened. They've oversold. I hope the goddamn TRAI gets off their ass and starts putting in place some rules over this kind of behaviour.

The Airtel people's solution to this is even better - upgrade to the 512 kbps plan, so that when it's throttled I'll get 384 kbps. Brilliant, if I upgrade now I won't even get the full speed. Talk about useful.

How long before they start throttling services they see as heavy? This kind of stuff really rankles. What's even worse is that the government-run BSNL is supposed to be providing proper services so that any privately-run company that tries this bullshit will bleed customers like it's been shot in the heart. Pakistan has WiMaX and we have throttled broadband.

How can they be oversold with the miserable Fraudband connection they provide customers? All their overpriced plans and they still handle handle these tiny amounts of traffic? Seriously pathetic.

The sad part is that you can do nothing about it. At all. The TRAI? Please. Bunch of incompetents like every other organisation here.

Welcome to India.
