My dad used to keep telling me this all the time. I managed to apply it for the past year or so. Then yesterday I decided to install new nvidia drivers in an unorthodox manner (using the packages from two releases ahead). Result: Unmitigated damage. Thank god I keep hard-drive images on DVD.

Improved 2D performance on the new drivers. Unfortunately, I get all sorts of artifacts.
